Hollow people in modern times

Pompei can be interpreted as modern people in despair and trapped in a vicious cycle. People do what they can to survive, but their addictions hinders them from making progress in life. So they become dead inside.

Oh where do we begin
The rubble or our sins?

The people cope with their own devices or vices. In modern times, this might be alcohol, drugs, sex, or social media. Because these don’t really satisfy and address their real issues, it results in emptiness. All it does is help them escape from themselves.

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us

All of these result in disappointment and despair as they realize they’re trapped.

And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills bringing darkness from above

The realization that it’s never ending, a cycle, a loop, with no way of escape.

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you’ve been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

In the end, all they can do is shout, cry, or laugh in despair.

Eh eheu ehue
Eh ehue ehue
